Illness Policies


We find October and March to be big "cold" months. According to medical statistics, it's very normal for a preschool child to have up to 7 or 8 colds during his/her first year of school. On the other hand, each year we do have many children with perfect attendance! Runny noses can be a problem during those months, and we do ask that if coughing persists, the child is kept home until the coughing can be controlled. If we find that a child has come to school with a fever, the parent will be called and asked to pick up the child. Some rashes can be contagious and because of this, we will not allow a child in school unless we have a note from a doctor stating what the rash is and that it is not contagious. If antibiotics are prescribed, the child must be on the medication for 24 hours before returning to school. You may call the school between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. to inform us if your child will not be in school due to illness. Please do not allow your child to talk you into letting him/her come to school when you know he/she is sick. Believe it or not, this does happen. As a parent, please take charge!

To help ensure the health of our children, the following is a guide for dealing with everyday illness:

 

Conditions under which a child should not attend school or under which parents will be called to take the child home. Conditions under which a child will be allowed to return to school.
Fever of 100 or above Temperature normal (fever-free for 24 hours
Diarrhea No longer occurring
Vomiting No longer occurring
Chicken Pox Pox have scabbed over
Conjunctivitis On medication for 48 hours
Strep Throat On medication for 48 hours
Ear Infections On medication
Head Lice Has completed treatment and is lice free and nit free
Unexplained Rash Dr. has seen and determined cause of rash



Medical Records: It is required that we have on file a medical record for each child. Children who do not have this information cannot begin class.
