Transitional Kindergarten This newly developed program is for the child who turns five by January 1st and comes to school five days (half or full). These same children will attend a regular kindergarten the following year. Pre reading and basic math concepts are taught at a very slow pace. We use a High Reach Reading Program and the Harcourt Brace Javanovich Math Program. Many parents use this year as a "prep year" for the fall baby who is not old enough for Kindergarten or those who are not developmentally ready for a kindergarten program. this program is for the child who has been in preschool for one or two years, who are socially adjusted and are ready to learn some pre reading and math fundamentals.
Our kindergarten class must have a minimum of eight children with a maximum of ten. A child enrolled in this class would go to first grade the following fall. The reading program is Modern Curriculum Press and emphasizes comprehension, listening, and writing skills. W use a phonetic approach to reading and supplement the program with materials from other reading series. Metropolitan testing is done in the fall so that progress can be assessed throughout the year. Journal writing is offered to those who demonstrate a writing ability and understand the skill of creative writing. The math series is Math Plus by Harcourt Brace and Javanovich. Unique to both Kindergarten groups are our Buddy Bear home visits, Formal Fridays, membership to our B.B.B.C. (Building Blocks Book Club), and several visits to the U-Mass Lowell center for the arts theater series. the children also visit local restaurants for lessons in manners when we are out in public! |
